The only place they took me was to Iquitos.  We went on a family vacation and had a great time.  We stayed in these bungalows, and we went through the jungles.  We went for a week.  And I bought a monkey.

Steve: You bought a monkey?

Stacy: Yeah. Don’t ask me. I was quite a little adventure for them, wasn’t I?  I bought a monkey while we were there, and I come to find out many years later it really wasn’t a monkey.  But they sold it to me as a monkey.  It looked like a monkey.  But all it did was screech and hold onto your head.

Anyway, I ended up selling it that week because the thing was weird.  It wasn’t like a chimpanzee or that kind of fun-type of monkey.  I mean this thing just screeched and held onto your hair.  I paid like ten bucks for it and I sold it and he actually became a famous little monkey.  I think he worked for one of the banks in a commercial.

Steve:  So was it a monkey in the end?

No.  I mean, well, when I went to the zoos here many years later it was some type of…it was a family of a monkey, some type of mammal.  But it wasn’t like a monkey monkey. It wasn’t a monkey.  I know that it wasn’t a monkey ’cause if I saw it again I would know what it was, but it wasn’t what we thought were monkeys.

Return trip to Peru canceled!

Unfortunately I had to cancel my trip to Peru this month. I am going back to graduate school at Rutgers to get my Masters in Education for Social Studies.

Then, with a little luck, I will land a job as a secondary social studies teacher!

It looks like I’ll need to raise about $15,000 to buy a used firetruck in mint condition and ship it — fully loaded – to Arequipa, Peru.

spare fire truck, anyone?

My friends in Arequipa, Peru, are looking for a new fire truck.  They like the following one they found on  It’s a 2002 Pierce 61′ Skyboom.

The fire equipment in Arequipa is in really bad shape.

Practice your Spanish by reading this recent article – but essentially it says that the fire equipment in Arequipa is in really bad shape:

Invitacion – Arequipa firefighters – anniversary

I hope I can help my friends at the Cuerpo General de Bomberos Voluntarios de Miraflores, Arequipa, Peru.  I did some legwork and found a couple organizations that might be able to help them acquire some donated equipment, everything from the small stuff to a fire truck.

They are celebrating their second anniversary as a fire station — they sent me an invitation, although I can’t make it because I don’t arrive in Arequipa until June 24.

However, I do expect to visit and meet them while I’m there.  Would anyone like to donate?  If I find a used fire truck to send to Peru, it will cost some money to ship it there.
